50 Self Portraits – Week One

I’m starting a new project where I will draw one self portrait every day for 50 days. I’ve already missed 3 days so it’s not going to be 50 days in a row. Just 50 days, no matter how long that takes. So it’s sort of a daily drawing project, but not a very strict one.

Here is my first batch. These portraits measure 10 x 7 inches.

I collect things from the places I visit. Rocks, sea shells, leaves, bones. These things help give me a tactile recollection of a place and time that I can’t get from a photograph. Also I just like the process of hunting for interesting little specimens, admiring them, and showing my friends.

This box is temporary storage for some of my collections:

The tiniest shells:

Some of the most interesting things have been found at Revere Beach. Is this a human vertebrae?

This case is displayed on the wall and holds my favorite collection, from a road trip through Wyoming, Utah, and Arizona. Unfortunately I didn’t keep track of which things came from where, so when I went to put them in this case they were all jumbled up together and I couldn’t separate them out. The ones I do know are the weird pine cone and tree bark is from the Grand Canyon, the chalky white stones are from Yellowstone, and the chalky pink stones are from Bryce Canyon.

The gray thing here is a dinosaur bone! I got it for free with a coupon from a rock and fossil shop in Moab, Utah:

What do you collect?
