“The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science. Whoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are dimmed.” – Albert Einstein
I first came upon this quote from Einstein’s essay “The World As I See It” when I was a senior in college. I was working on artist’s books for my Visual Books class, and paintings and soft sculptures for my senior thesis show. It was one of those quotes that immediately spoke to me, and it fell right into place along with the art I was making at the time. I even included it in one of my pieces for my Visual Books class:
These days, the quote still speaks to me. Whether I’m outside exploring nature or the city that I live in, or working on a custom journal for a client or a personal art project of my own, I remind myself to experience things with an open mind and a sense of wonder.
