The Sky In Iceland

Iceland

One of my favorite things about Iceland was the sky. Like in the western US, it was a big sky – because there are almost zero trees, you can see a huge amount of sky almost all the time. But what was different about Iceland’s sky was it felt low. The clouds were always low, fluffy, transparent, and quickly moving. The sky was always changing. The light was always dramatic! The rainbows were plentiful!

We saw lots of lenticular cloud formations, which I had never seen in person before. They’re neat!

In one part of the country, the air was super hazy. I think this was because of the gas being emitted from the Holuhraun lava field and Bárðarbunga volcano, not too far away.

The several photos above are from a hike we did in Skaftafell National Park. It would have been nice to have a clear sky on this hike, but the creeping fog made things very mysterious and otherworldly.
