Yellowstone Part II: Mount Washburn

On our first full day in Yellowstone, we climbed Mount Washburn on the eastern side of the park. With beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and Yellowstone Lake, and the added bonus of a couple groups of bighorn sheep on the trail, this was a great hike. There are two ways to get up the mountain. The trail we took switchbacks most of the way up (it used to be a ranger road, I guess) to a ranger lookout station. The wind was intense up at the top – so much so that we couldn’t manage to get photos of each other next to the elevation sign, so you’ll just have to imagine us standing next to the sign in that empty space! This was our first-ever foray into grizzly territory. We had our bear spray on hand, and thankfully we didn’t have to use it.
