The series that this drawing is a part of, titled “I Can’t Stay Here,” was made in response to experiences I have had in nature, in which I have felt transported to a world beyond the human world, where time moves more slowly and the rhythms of nature become apparent. The drawings express a stillness and a quiet power beyond what is immediately visible, a moving and mystical experience. This drawing was inspired by a trip to the shoreline of New Hampshire in winter. I was struck by the stark differences in tone and color between the sea, sand, and snow, and the uninviting, unforgiving, unrelenting darkness of the sea.
