The series that this drawing is a part of, titled “I Can’t Stay Here,” was made in response to experiences I have had in nature, in which I have felt transported to a world beyond the human world, where time moves more slowly and the rhythms of nature become apparent. The drawings express a stillness and a quiet power beyond what is immediately visible, a moving and mystical experience. This drawing is based on a view I saw while travelling through Iceland. The crumbling mountain, looming over a small building and disappearing into the fog, had a timeless quality and made me feel awed by the power and scale of nature. Because of the fog, it wasn’t clear how tall the mountain actually was. The building served as a reminder of the fleeting human scale of time, compared with the vast scales of time in which the mountain formed and then began to disintegrate.
