The series that this drawing is a part of, titled “I Can’t Stay Here,” was made in response to experiences I have had in nature, in which I have felt transported to a world beyond the human world, where time moves more slowly and the rhythms of nature become apparent. The drawings express a stillness and a quiet power beyond what is immediately visible, a moving and mystical experience. This drawing was made after encounters with bison in the western US, especially in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. The was the bison gazed at me gave me the sense that I had entered uninvited into its world. I felt its power and the timelessness of its existence. I felt a primordial quality, as if staring back in time, while looking at the bison.
